SUNDAY, September 13                  15 Pentecost

Romans 14:4 Who are you to pass judgement on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

Like many Christians, I seek to serve; I look for opportunities to help. Unwittingly I appoint myself judge over who needs help and what help they need. I see the homeless on the street and decide who to give to and in what amount.

Congregations and community groups design our outreach ministries around the causes we judge to be most worthy. Various laws dictate who deserves what support, in what amount, and by what means.

Paul reminds us that we must be in service of our God—and that we cannot understand how God will redeem others. Who is already asking for my help? What are they saying they need? Am I willing to give them that control over my service, trusting that God alone can make them stand?

MOVING FORWARD: Is God inviting you to serve in a new way, one different from where you want to serve? How will you respond?
