THURSDAY, January 14         [Richard Meux Benson and Charles Gore]

Ephesians 2:13-14 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh, he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us.

Why do we always think that building a wall is a way to make peace? Walls to keep things out (or in) are a band-aid solution, at best. Walls do nothing to address real issues of how we live together, no matter where in the world we live.

The image of walls is a powerful, universally understood symbol. But the real picture for us as Christians, the one that defies our usual human response for security, is the one so beautifully stated in this letter. Jesus’ body is broken for us, broken to break down walls between us and heaven itself.

MOVING FORWARD: What are the walls in your life that need breaking down? Ask Jesus to help you.
