THURSDAY, November 14

1 Maccabees 1:11 In those days certain renegades came out from Israel and misled many, saying, “Let us go and make a covenant with the Gentiles around us, for since we separated from them many disasters have come upon us.”

If we had a title card like the ones in the movies, today’s would read: “Three Hundred Years or So Later.” The Seleucid king, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, is eager to “de-Judaize” Judea and Jerusalem. Some of the Jews are willing to accommodate or even collaborate with their conquerors in the interest of keeping the peace.

For us, peace is a gospel value. So is justice. And even though it sometimes feels like peaceandjustice is one word, the two are often in stark conflict. We can find multiple examples in history of Christians resorting to violence for the sake of justice (or at least what may be broadly perceived as justice). We must undertake a deep and difficult process of discernment to navigate between these two mandates.

MOVING FORWARD: Pope John XXIII had a very memorable quote about peace and justice. Do a little sleuthing and see if you can track it down.
