SATURDAY, March 14

Mark 5:15 They came to Jesus and saw the demoniac sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the legion: and they were afraid.

Some of us in more “advanced” parts of the world forget the deep mystery of the miraculous, especially when it comes to healings and exorcisms. Mark describes four exorcisms and refers to many more, showing us the ways Jesus points to the cosmic battle with Satan.

In this story, we begin to see that Jesus is coming to plunder Satan’s household and bring about his end. Jesus ultimately undermines the forces of evil and death completely in the crucifixion; the destruction of death by Jesus is the greatest victory for the kingdom of God. The resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate freeing of God’s good creation. In turning toward freedom, courage, and hope, we will know the peace Jesus proclaims.
