WEDNESDAY, April 14          [Zenaida, Philonella, and Hermione]

John 17:22 The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one.

At the height of a conflict in the Anglican Communion several years ago, I found myself at a church meeting with people from around the world. One morning, I was at a bus stop with a man whose national church was in public conflict with my own church. We talked for a while very amiably. At one point, I asked him, “Is it difficult to be at a meeting like this among people with whom you disagree on important issues?” His answer was completely unexpected. “We are Anglicans, a global family. When you have a family disagreement, you cannot cut off your own blood. You love them. Our love is deeper than our conflict.”

This gentle man reminded me that Christian unity runs as deep as it gets, even when it doesn’t look that way. Indeed, how can we preach about Christ’s reconciling love to the world if we inside the church do not cling to the unity that Jesus prayed and hoped for us?

MOVING FORWARD: This week, research each of the dioceses that we pray for as part of our Anglican Cycle of Prayer. Learn about their ministries and look for places of common interest.
