Luke 6:21 Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

Hunger gets our attention. Its pangs remind us that we have needs. The grumblings and rumblings of hunger remind us of our reliance upon sustenance from outside ourselves. The emptiness prompts us to go in search of what we are missing. Hunger will not be satisfied until it has received nourishment—this is true of our bellies and our souls.

I wonder if God designed us to feel spiritual hunger so we would seek heavenly food as we do the earthly. Our parents and grandparents say that when picky eaters “get hungry enough, they’ll eat.” And we do. Heaven’s food requires deep hunger and an acquired taste before we can taste and see and digest.

When we get hungry enough, we will be satisfied with nothing less than hearty and holy food for our filling.

MOVING FORWARD: Have you ever used fasting as a spiritual tool? Why or why not?
