FRIDAY, June 14

Luke 19:47 Every day [Jesus] was teaching at the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him.

Jesus is both fully God and fully human, and in this gospel reading we see this description of him borne out quite well. As he draws near Jerusalem, Jesus weeps out of sadness and frustration at people’s blindness to what is right in front of them. The Living Word stands ready to come into Jerusalem and save the world from sin, yet they are oblivious to what God is about to do with and through Jesus.

Can you imagine the fully human side of Jesus just yearning to do something and say something but being held back by the divine side? The sight of the moneychangers pushes all of Jesus over the edge. Jesus literally cleans house in the temple courts. There is no doubt in my mind that Jesus looks at each of our hearts the same way. I pray that he will find the temples of our hearts to be houses of prayer, dedicated to the Prince of Peace.

MOVING FORWARD: Does considering this story in a personal way change your understanding of it?
