SUNDAY, June 14                           2 Pentecost

Matthew 10:16 See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

In the Boy Scouts, I learned how to tie knots, sail and backpack, cook, and give first aid. But the most important thing I learned was the Boy Scout Motto: Be Prepared.

In many ways, this is what Jesus is saying when he sends the disciples on their missions. The world is a tough place. You’re going to be picked on, persecuted, and driven away. Also, they might kill you. Be prepared. He tells them that they will be like sheep in the midst of wolves. Don’t give in when things get hard. Keep proclaiming the Good News even when the world doesn’t want to hear it. Be prepared to be persecuted—and sometimes prosecuted—but never stop.

MOVING FORWARD: What unpopular beliefs do you hold because of your faith? What has it been like to proclaim something that isn’t received well?
