MONDAY, June 14                  Basil of Caesarea

Psalms 77:17 The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered; your arrows flashed to and fro.

It starts innocently with one small white cloud. Soon, a dozen such clouds, like cotton balls, dot the sky. Not much later, the clouds coalesce, rise, and darken. The air thickens. The wind gets pushy. The temperature drops sharply. Then the first spear of lightning snatches your attention, followed by a sudden boom, and you know you’re in danger.

Because of a particular meteorological pattern, this is what happens nearly every day between late June and early September in Colorado’s high mountains. If you happen to be above treeline on a rocky summit where these often-intense storms hit the hardest, you experience fear and awe simultaneously.

Strange as it sounds, if I’m in a safe position, I like seeing and hearing these mighty storms. In an age in which it seems the sky is the limit with our technological advances, these storms remind me that we are not in charge. Our collective hubris is no match for a deity whose unignorable voice thunders and rolls among the peaks.

MOVING FORWARD: The next time there’s a big storm, watch out the window (or from another safe space) and let yourself be astounded by God’s power.
