TUESDAY, July 14                           Argula von Grumbach

Joshua 2:17-18 The men said to [Rahab], “We will be released from this oath that you have made us swear to you if we invade your land and you do not tie this crimson cord in the window through which you let us down, and you do not gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your family.

Born in the late 1490’s, the little girl Argula von Grumbach wasn’t supposed to read the Bible or be educated in any real sense. Her father disagreed with this societal norm, making sure she voraciously read and memorized the Bible. I imagine she read about Rahab putting her life on the line for others, and a seed was planted in her heart.

Argula became the first woman writer and defender of the Protestant Reformation. In addition to trying to silence her insistence that protestant beliefs were biblically sound, Argula’s detractors attacked her character on the basis of her gender. She wrote, “I send you not a woman’s ranting, but the Word of God. I write as a member of the Church of Christ against which the gates of hell shall not prevail.”
