WEDNESDAY, July 14                  [Argula von Grumbach]

Mark 2:22 No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.

I remember the first time I heard “New Wine” by the band Hillsong United. I had just come out of a long and difficult season of repentance and transformation, and the lyrics struck me as distressingly autobiographical. They describe the process of making new wine, how it involves pressing and crushing. I felt like that’s what I had been through: a holy wine press, removing the outer casing of unhealthy beliefs and sinful patterns in order to extract the essence of who I am in Christ.

Shortly after I heard this song and made the connection between new wine and my life, I read this chapter of Mark. I realized I was trying to put my resurrected heart back into my old life, and the two were incompatible. I needed new wineskins.

Jesus radicalizes everything. In light of his fulfillment of the Law, his victory over death, and his invitation for us to have a resurrected life with him—we cannot be the same after an encounter with him. Let’s not even try.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you need new wineskins?
