WEDNESDAY, August 14

Mark 10:21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”

When my spouse retired, we simplified a lot of things about our life. As we downsized, we had to make decisions about every single item we owned. This exercise got easier as we went along and ultimately resulted in lighter spirits and a more nimble life. It’s not about the stuff.

In this passage, Jesus isn’t saying, You can’t have stuff—stuff is bad. Instead, he is reminding us that we may be doing all the right things, but our priority must be doing right by people. Far more important than possessions or earthly success or even being a good person is letting go of temporal things that keep us from loving God and neighbor. Jesus knows this is hard. He knows we will struggle, which is why he looks at us with love.

MOVING FORWARD: As we begin to steer into a new academic year, try doing a little cleaning out and clearing up of your own.
