TUESDAY, January 15

Isaiah 40:25-26b To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name.

One night, we went boating off the Florida Keys. The engine of our friends’ pontoon softly chugged us away from the lights and noise of the tiki bar and into an eerie mangrove forest. Soon we reached the black vastness of open water and were glad for our experienced navigator.

In the deep ocean night, I had an epiphany: Stars and planets have not been flung out in some random emptying of God’s dustpan. They have been placed with love to be charted by connecting the dots. God has provided a navigation system and mandated its stability.

In today’s reading from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he prays that the eyes of our hearts may be enlightened so we can know the hope to which God has called each of us. My heart’s eyes are still dazzled in amazement.

MOVING FORWARD: Next time the weather allows, find a nice dark spot and look up at the stars.
