FRIDAY, October 15                  Teresa of Avila

1 Corinthians 15:10a But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain.

(CW // self-harm)

Today I celebrate twenty years as a cancer survivor. I have experienced a lot of anguish. My most precious wish was to become a mother, but the cancer frustrated it. It was a hard knock. I quit my job and got rid of my car. I locked myself in my room and refused to go out with my friends. I started hurting myself, committing acts of self-sabotage, and even believing that I was alone in the world. There were many people who did not abandon me, but I still felt alone.

After many sessions of spiritual direction with the priest at my church, I understood that my role in life was to be a “Titi” (aunt). Today, I live, loving my seven nephews and nieces and receiving the same love from them. Now I understand that I can direct my maternal feelings toward my nieces, nephews, and godchildren, and the students who have passed through my care. Christ has risen in me for the benefit of those around me.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you know someone with cancer who needs more of your presence in their life?
