FRIDAY, February 15

Mark 10:38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”

While running errands together last week, my daughter started talking about her college plans. She’s only four years old, so she doesn’t quite get the college experience yet, but she enjoys talking about it nonetheless.

“I want to go to a college with lots of trees. I want my brother to go to the same college as me. And I want to be a scientist.”

As we continued talking, she promised that she would call me every day and visit home every chance she gets. While these are very sweet ideas, I know something she doesn’t. Promises are easy to make when you are four; they are much harder to keep when you are nineteen.

I imagine this is how Jesus feels when his disciples promise to follow him wherever he goes.

MOVING FORWARD: How does spiritual maturity help us make and keep our promises?
