Psalm 51:11 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Years ago, I found myself leaving a church position because the rector and I were simply at odds. That priest eventually left the parish; I went on to become director of communications for our diocese. For a long time, I thought of that priest sneeringly. Then, I mostly forgot about him.
Twenty years later, I was coming out of one of the large halls at General Convention when someone said, “Well, hello there!” There he was, the man who had effectively driven me from a church job.
To my astonishment, I was glad to see him! We talked for a few minutes, catching up. Apparently, I had forgiven him, and God must have done that within me—I surely could not have done it myself.
MOVING FORWARD: How will you allow the Holy Spirit to clean your heart and renew your spirit today?
