FRIDAY, May 15                  Pachomius of Tabenissi

Matthew 7:3 Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?

Maybe you’ve heard it this way: “When you point at someone else, three fingers point back at you.” In other words, when you cast blame on someone else, you should also take stock of your own culpability. There’s usually plenty of blame to go around.

Interestingly, finger pointing is considered uncouth in many cultures. Instead people “point with their lips.” This can mean scrunching the lips or nodding in a particular direction. Sometimes the eyes or nose are involved too.

I wonder what it would be like to think of pointing itself in a different way. What if we pointed at praiseworthy things, using words to build up instead of tear down, that edify instead of demoralize? What if we pointed out promise and potential instead of pitfalls and potholes? What would we notice in others? What would we notice in ourselves?

MOVING FORWARD: This week, challenge yourself to see the promise of things, rather than the pitfalls. See how this changes your week.
