SATURDAY, June 15

Luke 20:3-4 [Jesus] answered them, “I will also ask you a question, and you tell me: Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?”

The chief priests, scribes, and elders come to Jesus and ask him all sorts of aggressive questions. Why can’t they just stop for a moment and listen to the message Jesus presents? The reason: Pride, plain and simple. The good news Jesus consistently teaches strips them of their worldly power and position. Since they can’t refute or challenge his message, they change the subject.

No one can argue with Jesus’ central message of God’s love and grace, so people change the subject and attack individuals or groups as uneducated or simple-minded. Jesus turns the tables on the temple leaders with his response. In effect, Jesus gives the same answer he gives to John’s disciples: Open your eyes and see what is right in front of you! It can’t be more obvious. Look at how this good news changes people and the world.

MOVING FORWARD: Why is Jesus so dangerous to powerful people? Why is he so attractive to poor people?
