MONDAY, July 15

Acts 11:26b So it was that for an entire year they met with the church and taught a great many people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called “Christians.”

I grew up going to summer camp at Shrine Mont, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, referred to colloquially as “the mountain.” I experienced radical love and welcome—and the deep reassurance that I was indeed a child of God. As a young adult and a cabin counselor, my fellow counselors and I passed these values on to the young ones in our charge.

There is something so singular and potent about the time I spent on the mountain. I was helping to build something unique and raw and real. We worshiped daily, sang (and sometimes shouted) praises to God, created traditions, and embraced one another’s divine uniqueness.

I imagine that my mountaintop experience is something like what the people in Antioch feel as they begin being the church—the soft newness, making something out of (seemingly) nothing, the righteous pride, and grace abounding.
