MONDAY, March 16

Mark 5:34, 41b [Jesus] said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease...Little girl, get up!”

In reading this story about the privileged and the poorest, we have much to learn from both angles of view: one lesson is to comprehend the power of God in Jesus as generative and nurturing. Another perspective—as I heard one woman say—The beauty of standing up is that others see you standing and are encouraged to stand up as well.

Today’s gospel holds one story within another. Both women healed by Jesus elicit our empathy. Both are defined by their social status, need, and the miraculous healing power of Jesus. They are healed and restored to community. One woman claims the healing for herself; another is healed because Jesus sees and acts on her father’s advocacy and humility.

MOVING FORWARD: How can you be a humble advocate when the people you love are struggling?
