Matthew 7:14 For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

A family friend made his fortune and retired early. He bought and renovated a large cattle ranch, turning one of the dwellings into a Christian retreat center. At the entrance was the sign: “Welcome to Narrowgate.”

Across the driveway stretched a cattle guard, long pieces of pipe laid over a trench, serving as a barrier so that the cattle don’t escape. Cows are physically capable of walking across the guard, but they have bad depth perception and are afraid of the darkness beyond the grid. Except for a few brave (or bull-headed) cows, they avoid it.

The juxtaposition of the Narrowgate sign and the cattle grid seems an apt metaphor for today’s reading. While the path may be narrow, Jesus takes to the cross and opens wide his arms to welcome us. Our call as people of faith is to summon the courage to overcome our fears—to be willing to make sacrifices and see things rightly—so that we can find the road that leads to life.

MOVING FORWARD: Has a narrow view ever eclipsed your idea of how wide God’s love could be? What changed you?
