WEDNESDAY, June 16                  Joseph Butler

Luke 20:27-28a Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question.

The resurrection of the body simply says that we will one day live forever in a state unmarred by pain, illness, attrition, or even death. We strive to achieve that state now via nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, and even medical procedures, but eventually, we all fall apart and return to the earth.

But Jesus’ resurrection offers the prototype of what awaits us. Imagine: death itself, a five-letter word written on a whiteboard, erased in one swipe. As New Testament scholar N.T. Wright said when teaching about the redemptive power of Jesus, “Death is a monster,” but because of Jesus, monsters hold no power, no matter how scary they look.

MOVING FORWARD: Read through the Burial Office, found in The Book of Common Prayer, starting on page 491. How do these words help you understand death—and the life to come?
