SUNDAY, January 17                  2 Epiphany

1 Corinthians 6:20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

We prize freedom, so it might not exactly be good news to have Paul tell the Corinthians that their bodies are not their own. He says instead that their bodies are temples for the Holy Spirit.

So much of our spirituality seems to be outside our bodies, mystically elsewhere. Paul points us to something completely different and not ephemeral. While our bodies are earthly things, certainly fleeting and mortal, what our bodies house is the capacity to love, pray, worship—and the ability to change ourselves and the world.

While our bodies are fallible, earthly vessels, they are vital to the mission of God and our knowledge and love of God. Paul says that all of this fantastic news about what our bodies can do makes them worthy of care. Our bodies are a temple for the Holy Spirit, shared with us by God. We are worthy of attention and care from God and ourselves.

MOVING FORWARD: How will you care for your body today?
