SATURDAY, October 17                           Ignatius of Antioch

Luke 9:50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Perhaps the United States of America has always been an antagonistic society, founded as it was on being against England, against monarchy. Certainly, contemporary American culture seems to thrive on choosing sides and defending them mightily—be it a baseball team, a political party, or a church denomination.

Jesus speaks up against exactly this kind of partisanship in today’s reading. Jesus doesn’t take sides—although he clearly has preferences. He is not against the powerful—unless they do wrong. Instead, he is for mercy, justice, righteousness, healing, wholeness, and fair treatment for all God’s people. I imagine Jesus is thrilled that yet another of God’s children is embracing our innate power to do good in the world.

MOVING FORWARD: How is Jesus calling you to embrace your innate power for something rather than against? What will you choose?
