SATURDAY, April 17                    [Kateri Tekakwitha]

Luke 4:4 Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’”

Jesus and the devil have a remarkable exchange in the wilderness. Three times, the devil quotes scripture to tempt Jesus to do evil. And three times, Jesus replies to scripture with scripture. Two things stand out for me in this exchange. First, it’s clear that scripture can be used for good or evil. Here we see the devil at work with Jesus, but perhaps the devil is also at work in our world as people use scripture as a blunt weapon to shame or divide people or to justify their evil deeds. Instead, the scriptures testify to God’s mercy and compassion. They challenge us to love God and our neighbors.

Second, Jesus was ready to counteract the assaults of the devil with the riches of scripture. I don’t think Jesus learned the Bible by magic or osmosis; I think he learned the scriptures by reading, studying, and hearing them taught. We should do the same so that we too are ready with the word of God when the devil assaults us. The Bible should be a force for good, and it can be if we steep ourselves in the words and let them shape us.

MOVING FORWARD: Consider reading a book of the Bible from start to finish.
