MONDAY, June 17

Luke 20:9 [Jesus] began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to tenants, and went to another country for a long time.”

We could approach the parable of the wicked tenants in several ways, but I like to focus on the fact that the tenants do not actually own the land. They only work it, which reminds me of a hymn I love.

We give thee but thine own,

whate’er the gift may be;

all that we have is thine alone,

a trust, O Lord, from thee.

None of what we have is ours. What God has given us is meant to be used in a certain way. When we use our gifts well, we give them back to God. One of my patients asked me if I was any good at my job. I responded, “I think I’m pretty good, but what I do know for sure is that I believe this is what God made me to do. When I operate, I feel God’s pleasure.”

MOVING FORWARD: How do you offer your gifts back to God?
