WEDNESDAY, July 17

Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”

Over and over again Jesus dares to sit with, speak to, or help the unwanted, the outcast, and the “unclean.” Each time they challenge Jesus for these actions, he puts doubters in their place, drops the mic, and stops the show completely.

The Pharisees have learned all they are willing to learn, and they are not smelling what Jesus is cooking. They have no room for those who don’t fit their molds or ideas of how people ought to act or pray or be. They are totally fine with a very small idea of how big God can be, and a very exclusionary idea of the kingdom of God.

Jesus says that all are welcome in the kingdom of God, and he begins calling those he knows will respond. The people he calls are sinners who know their need for redemption and who move toward God to find it.

MOVING FORWARD: When was the last time you tried to make God or the kingdom small?
