FRIDAY, July 17

Romans 12:9, 20-21 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good…“If your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Jesus teaches us that compassion begets compassion. I'm not sure what sparked a shift within me, but I clearly remember standing in a checkout line in Target and making a choice to be really kind to a very clearly distracted cashier.

This prompted a conversation about a betrayal and difficulties she was facing. I said something encouraging and she thanked me for my kind words. That day I discovered the joy of sharing kindness.

Years afterward, my daughter asked, "Why are you so kind to strangers?" I explained, "It helps me. It gives me joy. I need all the practice I can get if love is going to be my instinct."

MOVING FORWARD: Make a special effort to be compassionate this weekend.
