FRIDAY, September 17                  Ember Day

Psalm 69:4a I have grown weary with my crying; my throat is inflamed.

Once upon a time, I wrote two books, both spiritual memoirs. In the second book, I told the story of what I called The Year Everything Fell Apart and how God met me in the mess of it all. I told of the beauty found in the unraveling and in the cracks of busted expectations. Yet, when it came time to release this book into the world, I found that I just couldn’t muster the same excitement that I had for my first book. I had grown weary with my crying, and with my story of crying. I was one-hundred percent over myself. I was ready for a new story. I was done with being sad and talking about being sad.

But in the years since that book was birthed, I have found myself returning to its lessons over and over. It turns out that grief isn’t something we get to check off the list of Human Experiences, never to return. Since the book’s release, I have experienced more busted expectations, more heartbreak. And again, I have become weary with my crying. And again, I’ve found the steadfast love of God waiting in my sadness. And this is the miracle: while we may grow weary of our crying, God never does.

MOVING FORWARD: Have you ever grown weary of your crying?
