MONDAY, January 18         The Confession of Peter

Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

“Who do you say that I am?” My spiritual director gave this question to me to contemplate for a liturgical season. She was clear: “Don’t try to spiritualize the question. Don’t try to be abstract with it or mystical: Just look at every word and think about your answer.”

Who do you say that I am? I started asking questions. “Do you want me to answer who I think Jesus is?” She said, “Go wherever it takes you.” And so I did. But as I reflected, I found myself talking to myself a bit, asking the same question. Who do I say that I am? And I wondered, if I asked this question of those I work with, those I live with, what would their answer be?

MOVING FORWARD: “Who do you say that I am?” is not a question we ask very often. Answer the very question Jesus asks—but think about what others would say about you.
