WEDNESDAY, November 18

Revelation 21:12-14 It has a great, high wall with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates are inscribed the names of the twelve tribes of the Israelites; on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city has twelve foundations, and on them are the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Today’s reading from Revelation is brought to us by The Number Twelve. Featured in both the Old and New Testaments, the number twelve is significant because it carries a meaning of wholeness or completeness. The future Holy City of Jerusalem is a city of completeness—perfect and beautiful in every way, subject only to God’s rule.

The New Jerusalem descends like a bride, coming down from heaven, brilliant as a jewel. My heart yearns for this beautiful, whole place. I want to live in a place where God’s complete and holy love shines like the sun, where we all live in harmony and peace. What are we doing to bring about this new world? Are we living our lives in ways that encourage that beautiful bride to come down to earth?
