SUNDAY, November 18      26 Pentecost

Psalm 16:8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand I shall not fall.

As I type these words, the church’s tower bells ring out the noon hour. I wait patiently for a random hymn played on the carillon. This happens every day at noon, and it never gets old. I’m excited, trying to guess what the hymn of the day will be.

Today, as the bells play, my pulse races a little as the notes ring out. In my mind I sing, “O food to pilgrims given, O bread of life from heaven, O manna from on high!” Only days before someone asked me for a favorite hymn that sounded good a capella. I suggested this very hymn, now ringing out from the tower.

I don’t believe everything happens for a reason, but sometimes I know God has good reasons for why things happen as they do. Today it was God saying, Take heart! I am always there before you.

MOVING FORWARD: Sing your favorite hymn with someone you love.
