MONDAY, November 18

1 Maccabees 3:19 It is not on the size of the army that victory in battle depends, but strength comes from Heaven.

Judas Maccabaeus succeeds his father Mattathias and wracks up a string of impressive military victories against the Seleucids. Still, when he proposes attacking an army that outnumbers his own, his lieutenants demur. Judas reminds them that they are God’s vessels, and no one can successfully resist God.

An often-used turn of phrase says that we should pray as if everything depends on God and act as if everything depends on us. Yet, I have watched people pursue and make decisions about programs and projects, many undertaken by a parish or a diocese, and behave as though God isn’t a factor. Usually, this manifests as setting goals that are too modest, relying on resources that are too meager to accomplish very much. Judas Maccabaeus realized that God never under-resources an endeavor that he calls his followers to undertake.

MOVING FORWARD: Are your dreams too small? Pick one area in which you might stretch, praying and believing that God provides.
