WEDNESDAY, November 18                           Hilda of Whitby

James 4:4 Adulterers! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

We don’t know for sure who the author of James was, though there is plenty of scholarly speculation. I suspect he wasn’t much fun to know. This person was an excellent arbiter of what was best for the burgeoning Christian community but probably a bit too righteous and preachy in day-to-day dealings to have been the star of coffee hour.

Like many voices we hear in the Bible, from the prophets to John the Baptist, the author of James has some hard things to say to us and provides us with a good, if difficult, spiritual model.

Thank God for the Jameses of the world. They act as speedbumps for the rest of us who lack their discipline, who are quite cozy with the world and sidle up to temptation with one toe in the fountain of life.

MOVING FORWARD: Do a little research on the authorship of James. Let us know what you learn by using #ForwardDayByDay.
