MONDAY, February 18

Psalm 89:9 You rule the raging of the sea and still the surging of its waves.

This bit of Psalm 89 always reminds me of Jesus and his disciples in the middle of the Sea of Galilee. The sea is calm, and since Jesus has been busy teaching and healing, he takes a nap. As the wind picks up and the waves begin to swell, fear sets in. The disciples panic. In a whirlwind of terror and anger, they wake Jesus from his sleep.

Jesus looks out at the storm. “Be still,” he commands the waves. And they and the wind listen.

Jesus’ earliest followers know their scriptures. This is one of many moments during their time following Jesus when they begin to realize he is more than just a good teacher.

If Jesus can calm the sea, he can calm the other storms that rage within and around you, and me, and everyone else. Thanks be to God.

MOVING FORWARD: Are you weathering a storm? Wake Jesus up, and ask him to still the storm in your heart. Prepare to see a miracle.
