SATURDAY, May 18

Luke 7:18b-19 So John summoned two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?”

A friend recently found the man of her dreams through online dating. When she found him, she knew he was the one. In some ways, he’s different than what she imagined, but he was what she had been looking for. Had she focused on what she thought was missing, she could have missed the love of her life.

Have you ever missed a blessing because it didn’t look like you thought it would? Have you ever been so focused on the bad that you couldn’t see the good? Looking and seeing are different. Looking is based on images you see in your mind. Seeing discerns the soul-deep truth of what you find.

“What did you go out to see?” Jesus asks those who question his identity. Often what we see is the result of what we go looking for—or how we perceive what we find.

MOVING FORWARD: How can you be more mindful of the differences between seeing and looking?
