WEDNESDAY, September 18                  Ember Day

1 Corinthians 2:3 And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling.

Today is the first of three Ember Days this week (Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday). Ember Days fall once in each season and are observed by clergy as days of fasting and prayer, a time for deep reflection on their vocation. Ember Days are also the appointed times for those preparing for ordination to write letters to their sponsoring bishop.

My Ember letters have sometimes been written with weakness, fear, and much trembling. It is powerfully humbling to open up your relationship with God to another’s scrutiny, even though we know we are accountable to one another and Christ.

In writing my own Ember letters, I discovered a deeper trust in God. Those letters were a kind of confession, where I could be frankly honest with God about who I am and see more clearly God’s invitation for my life.

MOVING FORWARD: Do a little research around Ember Days. Consider writing your own letter and sharing it with your clergy person or other trusted friend.
