FRIDAY, January 19

John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and truth.

I was six when the Beatles appeared in the funereal winter of 1964, weeks after the assassination of President Kennedy. The band’s music changed my world. It was unlike anything I had heard before. I played the song, “She Loves You,” over and over in my room, lost in its sheer power and exuberant joy. But listening to the song wasn’t enough. I had to feel it. I sat crosslegged with my record player on my lap and let the song’s vibrations travel through me.

Decades later, I was surprised to read that a studio technician thought “She Loves You” was a dud song. But he had only read the lyrics: lots of “she loves you” and “yeah, yeah, yeah.” Then he heard the music and felt the power of its spirit.

When I sit with the heart of a child, the words of Jesus come singing out of the Bible. I feel both the soothing quiet and boundless joy of the spirit of God. I want to play those words over and over.
