SATURDAY, January 19

Ephesians 3:18-19 I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with the fullness of God.

For years, my spiritual journey focused on adding more—knowledge, Bible reading and study, good works—to grow closer to God. When I inevitably fell short, I felt inadequate. As I became involved in a new-to-me formation program, I saw things in a new light.

“To be really who we are, we need to subtract from ourselves, not add,” Franciscan Sister Norma Rocklage explains. “Our true self is to get rid of whatever we have piled on ourselves that gets in the way.”

Spiritual sages praise the virtues of becoming one with God rather than being first in line at the throne of heaven or in the rat race on earth. As a beloved Franciscan prayer asks, “May we see ourselves as another Word of Yours made flesh to your honor and glory.”

MOVING FORWARD: Have you become stuck in doing more but feeling less? What is one thing you can change to help unstick yourself?
