MONDAY, November 19

James 2:17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

Wednesday afternoon from three to five is my favorite time of the week. That’s when our parish’s after-school club meets to give choral instruction, teach the faith, and help with schoolwork for more than twenty elementary-school age children.

Recently, our faith topic was corporal works of mercy: feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, care for the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. After seven weeks, I asked these children why we should strive to do these acts in our daily life.

You can guess at some of the answers: To be kind. Because if we don’t we’ll get in trouble. Because the Bible says so. Then a little girl raised her hand: “Because God loves us, and because God wants to love others through us.” James might have said the same thing about love.

MOVING FORWARD: Do your own research on corporate acts of mercy. How will you continue to incorporate them into your own life?
