FRIDAY, November 19         Elizabeth of Hungary

Matthew 18:19-20 Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.

What is your average Sunday attendance? How many families with children do you have coming on Sunday? How big is your children’s program?

These are some of the questions and comments that one of my Native colleagues had to endure at every clergy gathering. His congregation was a typical small mission church located on an American Indian reservation with a small average Sunday attendance but a large membership base. As he would say, “All the grandmas come to church, then they go home and cook a meal for their big families. Some of these ladies are cooking for twenty or more people!”

I once heard a Native priest say that, in some ways, when these elders go back home, the liturgy continues with more breaking of the bread. I wonder if these numbers will one day be counted.

MOVING FORWARD: What is the measure of a successful church?
