FRIDAY, June 19                           Adelaide T. Case

Numbers 13:30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy [the land], for we are well able to overcome it.”

The children of Israel have been wandering in the desert for forty long years, and they are tired. God has promised them a land flowing with milk and honey, and now they are on the precipice of attaining it. Fortified cities and strong armies stand in their way.

The conquest of Canaan is deadly, one of the most gruesome and difficult stories we read in the Bible. Yet, in it we find an image of faithfulness. Even after hearing of the immensity of the obstacles, Caleb quiets Israel’s anxious murmuring and declares not only that they will win the battles ahead but also that they are “well able to overcome” them. Caleb believes God’s promise.
