FRIDAY, November 2

Luke 12:13-31. You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?

After completing graduate school I worked a temporary job, doing a bit of freelance writing while looking for more permanent work. Without a reliable source of income, it was difficult to plan. Could I afford a new sweater? How much could I spend on dinner? In some respects it was an exercise in humility. I did all I could to prepare—worked hard, applied for jobs, saved when possible, and spent within my means—but ultimately I had a limited amount of control over my future. Even the fact that I was fortunate enough to have a support network of family and friends if things went badly was a reminder that my well-being is not completely in my own hands.

When we spend too much time worrying, Jesus reminds us, we make ourselves bigger than we are and succumb to the illusion that we can control much of anything. We can lie awake at night wondering what tomorrow will bring, and watch our hair turn gray and bags form under our eyes, or we can rest in the knowledge that our hearts are out of our hands.
