FRIDAY, November 2

Ecclesiasticus 34:8b And wisdom is complete in the mouth of the faithful.

“You mean I’ll see my grandmother again someday?” The totally amazed child who spoke these words was preparing for baptism—along with her mother—and attending an after-school program hosted by my parish. The group had been discussing All Souls’ Day and life after death. Until this point the concept had eluded her, but now it was as if this precious child caught a glimpse of one of the Mysteries of the faith and was transformed.

One of the eucharistic prayers said at funerals come to mind as I reflect on my interaction with the child, “For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens.” Jesus admonishes us not to be anxious about this life but rather to consider the non-anxiousness of the lilies and the birds…and maybe the simplicity of a child embracing faith.

MOVING FORWARD: Which of the Mysteries of the faith most fills your heart with wonder? Meditate on it today.
