MONDAY, November 2                           All the Faithful Departed

Revelation 14:1 Then I looked, and there was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion! And with him were one hundred forty-four thousand who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.

Christians have relied on symbols as long as we have existed. A fish for believers, a key for Peter, a book and a sword for Paul, a lamb draped over Agnes’s arm. We know martyrs by the palm branches they clutch. Palms are an ancient symbol of victory and carry the same meaning for the saints—the victory of spirit over flesh, of faithfulness over earthly torments.

Today, we commemorate all the faithful departed. Their love for Jesus encourages the memories we keep alive when we cannot carry on—they help reassure our hearts that many have come before us. In their company, we can persist.

MOVING FORWARD: Share a personal remembrance of one of the faithful departed from your life or church.

PRAY for the Dioceses of Rochester (England and USA) and Kushtia (Bangladesh)
