Luke 2:36a, 37-38 There was also a prophet, Anna...She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Women get short shrift in the Bible—especially old women—so it’s remarkable that Anna, an aged widow, is the first evangelist for Christ. Of course, Mary knows about her son’s divinity, and in the temple, Simeon recognizes Jesus as the child for whom he has been waiting. But Anna sees Jesus and knows immediately what she must do: Go and tell.
Scripture doesn’t give us additional details about Anna. I imagine her fervor, the feisty assurance of a woman in her 80s, long past caring about political correctness, convicted with the zeal of praising God and proclaiming God’s Word. I pray for the same strength and courage to walk in the footsteps of Anna, to be a prophet—a spokeswoman for God—in word and deed.
MOVING FORWARD: Who are the prophets in your life? How can you thank them today?
Today the Church remembers The Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple.
