Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful.
These days, if I walked into that same church, I’d be less shocked. I’m not sure that’s good. The fact is, the crucifixion of Jesus is outrageous. It’s abhorrently violent. It’s unjust. And, yet, the cross is much more than that.
Jesus willingly gave himself for us, just as he promised he would. The cross is a sign of God’s faithfulness to us, a promise that God’s love cannot be kept away, not even from the worst kind of scandalous violence. Whatever we have done, Jesus died for you and for me. The passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus have freed us from sin and death. Let us all confess our hope—the hope that Jesus’ love is for everyone, at all times and in all places.
