WEDNESDAY, June 2         The Martyrs of Lyons

2 Corinthians 7:5 For even when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted in every way—disputes without and fears within.

If anyone could be classified as an expert follower of Jesus, it would be Paul. Yet here Paul freely admits that he is troubled by disputes and fears. He is exhausted and unsure. Sound familiar?

Paul does, later, express great relief. However, he is clearly human in his anxieties and frustrations. Some Christian leaders—especially, it seems, those who are televised—present their lives as expertly managed and executed. They position themselves as winners in the game of faith, with the wisdom to instruct others about how to be winners as well. But Paul’s witness reminds us that there are no spiritual experts. Regardless of our training or how many followers we have, we are all fragile humans prone to doubt, inconsistency, and fear.

Jesus isn’t here for the winners who have it all together; he’s here for the people who don’t. Please join me as a member of the Losers’ Club.

MOVING FORWARD: Permit yoursef to feel uncertainty and anxiety. And then pray for strength and courage.
