SUNDAY, October 20                           19 Pentecost

Luke 18:5 Yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.

Ah, the persistent widow...the king was annoyed by her and decided to grant her justice because she was exhausting him. I wonder if God ever feels this way about me.

It is comforting that Jesus uses this parable to teach us that we need to pray always and never give up. Even when I feel like I am bothering God or annoying Jesus by asking for something repeatedly, I know I should continue to pray and not become discouraged.

We don’t need to bow our heads or close our eyes—we can pray in our hearts and minds all day long. And we don’t need long or elaborate prayers; we can make a plea with few words: Help my dad. Protect me. Heal her, please. What’s important is that we pray. Always.

MOVING FORWARD: How does the story of the persistent widow enrich the way you pray?
