WEDNESDAY, November 20

Revelation 21:10 And in the spirit he carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.

Above the south transept doors in a much-beloved house of worship is a massive stained-glass window that depicts this very scene from our lesson in Revelation. For thirteen years, I offered Evening Prayer in that space most nights, and during much of the year the setting sun illuminated the piece of glass.

I treasure the memory of those evenings as much as I treasure the anticipation of what this revelatory scene represents: the conclusion of all suffering, the consummation of all desire and longing, the fruition of God’s perfect kingdom of justice, righteousness, love, and peace.

Nothing we do, or fail to do, can hasten or delay the arrival of the New Jerusalem. It is a gift of God, arriving in God’s good time. Even so, come Lord Jesus.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you have a place set aside for your prayers? How can you make it one that reflects the beauty of God’s kingdom?

PRAY for the Dioceses of Dunkwa-on-Offin (West Africa) and Sambalpur and Durgapur (both in North India)
